Help Save Old Agoura’s Valley Oak Grove!

As of January 28, 2025, the Old Agoura Homeowners Board has voted to endorse the nursery location, south of the 101, as an alternative to the Driver & Colodny corner.

Agoura Hills’ controversial housing plan, allowing major density increases on already-congested primary evacuation routes along Kanan Road and Driver Avenue, would remove 10 of the 12 majestic oaks that make up the valley oak grove on the corner of Driver & Colodny in Old Agoura. Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way!

In 2022, the Agoura Hills City Council voted 4–1 to approve an updated housing plan and to allow a massive upzoning—up to 44 housing units at the Driver & Colodny oak grove corner (previously zoned single-family residential equestrian). This ecologically unique corner, with its magnificent Valley Oak grove, has many building constraints.

This upzoning—combined with plans for 564 housing units at the three local Twin Oaks shopping centers—endangers the safe evacuation of thousands along Kanan and most of Old Agoura.

There are alternatives and alternative densities that the City has not fully explored—solutions our neighboring cities have used.

“By-right” approvals—like 278 apartments at the Regency Theater property—can happen without any public process. Don’t be fooled by claims that “there is no project yet.”

Per the City’s Planning Commission attorney (hearing July 21, 2022), the City Council can amend the housing element and zoning code in the future. Feasible alternatives that haven’t been fully explored include underutilized parking lots and empty buildings, similar to what neighboring cities are using. It is a fact that the 2022 City Council chose these already-congested sites on primary evacuation routes—Driver and Kanan—not the State.

The urban upzoning at Colodny & Driver threatens not only the grove, but sets a dangerous precedent for all of Old Agoura.
